Expectations

To celebrate our your voice page I am making our first post about "Modern cloth Nappies, expectations and any hints and tips you might have for new mums and dads as well as those looking at trying a new brand"(long title I know).

With so many brands on the market I would like find out what your expectations were. As far as I am aware there is no such thing as a perfect nappy. One that will be super trim, very absorbent, made with designer fabrics, all natural, inexpensive and washes it self. Disposables don't do all of that but I think we have our expectations under control where the disposable is concerned. Look at the reason you are wanting to change to cloth or researching a change to cloth. Do you want to save money, you want to lesson your environmental foot print or the designs available are so cute that you have to have them.

You need to compare apples with apples and not apples with Oranges. They are not the same product but they do a similar job. I chose cloth nappies for a few reasons. My eldest son feels better in cloth and both my sons looks gorgeous when they have them on. We have also saved thousands of dollars and my husbands favorite positive is the amount of space in his garbage bin at the end of the week. We gain far more out of using cloth than disposables so we found the switch easy and the right decision. We also started out part time and then when my youngest was born we went full time I with both. We also did not have any pressure on ourselves that we had to use cloth or else.

What do you expect?

Bang for your buck .... You generally get what you pay for so be reasonable in what you want when you look at brands and their prices.

Wear times.... Research to find which fabrics are more absorbent, better for sensitive skin or need longer drying times.

Fit.... If all manufactures designed the same nappy life would be pretty boring and some people would look great and others would look like they are wearing a potato sack. If a brand is saying it's a low rise don't get upset when your very tall bub does not fit.

I use different brands for different times of the day. What that means, I may compromise trimness over absorbency when we are out, or if we are at home I might put a bulkier nappy but it is super soft and will be able to stay on for hours. I don't expect it to hold hours of wee during the day because I don't want to keep it on for 6 hours. In the end it is what works best for you. My expectations are now under control!

Maybe look at the Modern cloth nappy groups that are available or ask a supplier or manufacturer a question so you don't waste money on nappies that just won't work. I would love you to add in the comments if you had any unreasonable expectations with cloth nappies.

Just a thought (buying nappies)

Just a thought I was having whilst putting the New Grovia colours in store.

I have 3 factors when buying a Modern Cloth Nappy and depending on the order they will make my decision on the purchase

1st fit/use
2nd Design
3rd Cost
all 3 are very important!!!!

Almost all the brands I stock have a OSFM option but some offer night nappies, sized nappies, prefolds ect. Most brands will also have a multiple styles ie: all in one nappy, a snap in all in 2,  a pocket or newborn. (These are my most popular but others are available).
Each nappy in my personal stash is slightly different.  A different fit or it is a different style also price range is wide and  they will have a different use through out the day. One will be more absorbent another might be trimmer to go under clothes when going out. Another might be a WAHM nappy and a real  "Show Stopper" when guests are around.

Why am I telling you this?
Because  in almost all of the conversations I have had over the last few days 1 question has been asked and that is..
Should I just get 1 brand and then it's easy?

Well.. NO   not always.

I always suggest TRY a minimum of 3 brands and 2 styles that way you can work out the right fit for your baby.

Just because 1 is less expensive so you can afford more may not save you money in the long run. You may be purchasing 2 for  more money than that slightly more expensive one and then have more nappies to store and wash. On the flip side another could be very expensive but does not give the same fit as another and leak on your bub. 1 nappy may give you 2 hours yet the next brand may give you 4 hours. 1 nappy might be large yet another too low in the rise.  1 will take a lot longer to dry than another.

Use the manufacturers information as well as talk to Modern Cloth users and get their perspective. First hand knowledge is mighty helpful. It doesn't take long to find the right fit.

And.... just because 1 is recommend by lots of other people does not mean it is the right nappy for you.
You may also need to be aware that Soft, super cute Modern Cloth Nappies are more addictive than SHOES!

Thanks for listening and feel free to put your thoughts below in the comments section.Lou x

To welcome designer bums nappies to our store as well as the new 2013 prints we are giving away a designer bum OSFM Cotton Print.

And the Winner is Lynsey
Congratulations!
contact me when you get a chance. Lou x

Thankyou everyone for entering.  I will be using your fantastic comments on my page and website to let other famiilties know just how fantastic  you and cloth nappies are :)

About the Nappy (from DB)
Our OSFM Pocket Nappies have a 100% cotton designer outer, backed with a hidden layer of PUL and are lined with silky soft suedecloth.  Each nappy comes with a pack of two super thirsty tri-layer bamboo inserts.  Our inserts are made out of the most absorbent bamboo fleece available - you will probably only need one of the inserts for a small baby and use both as your baby gets older and becomes a heavier wetter.
Because our nappies have a hidden layer of PUL (polyurethane laminate), they are fine to use on their own and do not require covers of any sort.  Our nappies are recommended for daytime use and will typically last 3-4 hours. They may last longer than this however to prevent nappy rash we recommend that you change your baby every 2-4 hours.

Our OSFM nappies are designed to fit babies from approx 3.5kg all the way through to toilet training.  For a small baby, simply 'snap up' the nappy to the smallest size, adjusting the snaps to enlarge the nappy as baby grows. Stuff the pocket of the nappy with insert/s and fasten to baby just the same as you would a disposable.  All set!

How to Win
To win all you need to do is tell us by leaving a comment below. "What you love about cloth" If you have never tried cloth let me now why you would like to try!
The winner will receive 1 designer bums nappy of my choice. The competition will close next Sunday. Please be aware I may use your comment on my website or social media sites. It will be first name only!
Good Luckx
